Hi everyone! My name is Allegra. I'm a librarian.
I started out as a high school library teacher. I did that for about five years. It was a great job, but I hit burnout, unfortunately. I moved to Philadelphia, took a little time off, and got into the public library sector. I'm a children's librarian now and have been since 2019.
During my time in schools, I worked with a lot of kids who were neurodiverse. Some of these kids were autistic, some ADHD, some PTSD, at least one DID, and of course plenty with depression and/or anxiety.
I was diagnosed with depression when I was 18 or 19. I was diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive-type) when I was in my late 20s, while I was working at one high school. I was diagnosed with anxiety when I was in my mid-30s.
Basically, I spent my entire education not medicated for any sort of executive functioning or other mental health issue. Yes, this includes graduate school (librarians need a Master's Degree). I was never a straight-A student, but I muddled through pretty well for the most part grade-wise. My organization skills are bad, but I'm good at last-minute writing.
I'm now a mom and I'm watching my child have some possible traits of ADHD and autism. I'm doing my research and realizing that I might be autistic as well. There are some tests at Embrace Autism that make me consider that. It would make a lot of sense.
I decided to start this blog as mostly a place where I can freely discuss my feelings, journey, etc.
